Illegal recreational drugs including LSD, ecstasy and cannabis should be considered as alternative treatments for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, a Curtin University researcher says.
Stephen Bright, addiction studies co-ordinator at Curtin’s School of Psychology and a member of non-profit group Psychedelic Research in Science and Medicine, said some illegal drugs had proved effective and the decision to exclude them as a modern treatment option was more about “morality than evidence”.
Speaking on the sidelines of a drug and alcohol conference that started in Brisbane yesterday, Mr Bright said some banned drugs “may offer some opportunities for individuals who have not responded to traditional medicine to look at these alternative treatments”.
“I think there’s a moral panic in regard to the prohibition of drugs,” he said.
